Dear Member

This is to announce that tickets are now on sale for our Symposium in honour of Christopher Duffy, our first Secretary-General and renowned military historian. It will be held at the National Army Museum on 3 June 2023.

There will be speakers presenting papers on various aspects of eighteenth-century military history and the afternoon session will look at the life and work of Professor Duffy. The Keynote speech will be by Professor Guy Rowlands on “Louis XIV, the Camp of Compiègne and the Origins of the Modern Military Exercise”.

Tickets can be booked here –

Please note that there are a limited number of tickets to include lunch at the NAM and these need to be booked by close of play on 18 May at the latest.

There is also the possibility of a national rail strike on this date, so it would be prudent to book other methods of attending the conference if possible.

Best wishes

BCMH Symposium in Memory of Christopher Duffy– programme

Saturday 3 June 2023

To honour the memory of its founding Secretary General, Professor Christopher Duffy (1936-2022), the doyen of military historians of the eighteenth century, who very sadly passed away in November last year, the British Commission for Military History is organising a one-day symposium at the National Army Museum in London.

The symposium features presentations of exciting new research on the military history of the long eighteenth century from BCMH members, along with tributes to Professor Duffy.
