Tuesday 11 May and Tuesday 18 May
In two linked events over successive Tuesdays, From Reason to Revolution authors Robert Griffith and Tom Scotland will draw upon their recent new publications to shed light on two overlooked figures of the Peninsular War. We begin on 11 May with Lieutenant General Rowland Hill, whose mild-mannered exterior masked a great deal of skill and resolution. Both of those qualities were on display during Hill's command in southern Spain during 1811 and 1812 and helped ensure victory at Arroyomolinos and Almaraz. Rob Griffith covers both of these actions in his new book At the Point of the Bayonet and his talk will illustrate the story of Hill's success with photographs from his visits to the battlefields. Then on 18 May Tom Scotland will talk about Sir James McGrigor, subject of his recently-published biographical study. Superintendent of medical matters in Wellington's army during the latter part of the Peninsular War, McGrigor who oversaw a substantial and effective reform of medical and hospital arrangements. As Tom will explain, however, McGrigor's Peninsular service was just one part of a lengthy career that took this product of the Scottish Enlightenment to Flanders, the West Indies, India, Egypt, and Walcheren. This free talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session hosted by series editor Andrew Bamford, and attendees will have access to an exclusive code providing a discount off the book in question. Both events will be hosted using the web-based Demio platform, for which no special downloads are required. |
