BCMH member Frank Baldwin has been awarded the Alfred Byrne Memorial Medal by the Royal Artillery.

The citation is as follows;

Frank Baldwin is a Gunner veteran, military historian, battlefield heritage professional and member of both the British Commission for Military History and the International Guild of Battlefield Guides.  He specialises in European warfare from Caesar to the Cold War with a particular interest in the Napoleonic era, the mid-19th century wars between Prussia, Austria and France, and the Seven Years War. In addition to leading over 200 battlefield studies, Frank has published numerous works, including Gunners in Normandy: The History of the Royal Artillery in North-west Europe, January 1942 to August 1944.  It is for this work, that Frank is being recognised today. Gunner in Normandy was initiated by the late Lieutenant Colonel Will Townend as the official account of the Royal Artillery in the Normandy campaign. Following the latter’s death, Major Baldwin completed the project which forms an important part of the Royal Regiment’s historical record and the wider historiography of this decisive campaign of the Second World War. Gunners in Normandy is the definitive record of events, assembled from interviews with veterans, papers and documents from the RA Museum Archives, terrain studies, personal memoirs, war diaries and other official documents. It was published in paperback this year.  Frank followed up this publication with his equally significant D-Day Gunners: Firepower on the British Beaches and Landing Grounds, along with several articles in the Royal Artillery Journal and papers to the RAHS. For his remarkable scholarship, contribution to the national, campaign and regimental historiography and above all, his service to the Royal Regiment and its heritage, Major Frank Baldwin is awarded the Alfred Byrne memorial medal for 2025 for the best historical work in the field of the Royal Artillery
