Christopher Duffy’s funeral is now arranged for 21 December 2022 at 1 pm in St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Backheath, London http://www.stmarysblackheath.org.uk/.
If travelling by rail one needs to go to Waterloo, then to the adjacent Waterloo East station and from there by overground train to Blackheath.
This time will not suit everyone, but was the best that could be done given various constraints including scheduled rail strikes.
Please relay this to any individuals who might want to know and may not have been informed.
Professor Duffy, Founding Secretary General of the BCMH died on 16th November after a short stay in hospital.
Christopher was the doyen of military history historians of the 18th Century. The title of one of his twenty or so books might epitomise his legacy The Military Experience in the Age of Reason (1987) though he also wrote on the Austrian, German and Russian armed forces in other eras. Latterly he wrote extensively on the Jacobite campaign of 1745 / 46 and was involved in the preservation of the Culloden battlefield.
On 5 July this year he was presented with a Festschrift by Helion Books and the BCMH, an event which gave him great pleasure British Commission for Military History » Festschrift Presentation to Prof Christopher Duffy, 5 July 2022 (bcmh.org.uk).
As Founding Secretary General of the British Commission Christopher always maintained that it should be a ‘broad church’, open to both ‘professional’ and ‘amateur’ historians. The Commission has always sought to pursue this ethos.
