26 April - 30 April
BATTLEFIELD TOUR – MALTA - 26 TO 30 APRIL 2018
The response to the recent request for expressions of interest in the tour has been good and it is confirmed that the tour will go ahead between 26 and 30 April next year. It is still possible to book for the tour. The cost, exclusive of travel to Malta, is approximately €400 (sharing a room) or €500 for a single room. Details of the programme and administrative arrangements can be found below on the Expression of Interest post and applications may be made using the Response Form. You are advised to book early and once your booking has been confirmed you should reserve your flights to Malta.
Those who responded to the original notification should have heard from Michael Orr. Anyone who has not received a confirmation should contact Michael Orr.

Please note that in the first instance this tour is only open the BCMH Members and their partners.
The assumption is that travellers will make their own arrangements for flights to Malta. There are many flights every day from most parts of the UK and good prices can be obtained by early booking.
The Tour will be based on a 4 night stay in the Plaza Hotel, Sliema (http://www.plazahotelsmalta.com/).
The proposed programme is:
Thursday 26 April: Arrival; when flight times are known it may be possible to arrange a programme for the afternoon. Group Dinner
Friday 27 April: Tour Valletta to study the Great Siege of 1565, the fortifications including Fort St Elmo, the Second World War Tunnels and the defence of Malta 1940-1943. Return to Sliema or remain in Valletta for dinner as desired.
Saturday 28 April: Tour Birgu & Cottonera. Harbour Cruise to study the Dockyard. Visit Fort St Angelo. More on the Great Siege. Visit Fort Rinella, the restored British 19th century fortification with the Armstrong 100-ton Rifled-Muzzle-Loading Gun. Notre Dame Gate and adjacent British military hospital.
Sunday 29 April: British 19th Century fortifications in the Victoria Lines and Fort Mosta. Ta Qali airfield and aviation museum to study the air defence of Malta and its importance as an air base. Staff ride to study the Axis plan to invade Malta and the British defence plan.
Monday 30 April: depart
Please note that the programme is subject to revision and the order of events may have to change.
All costs of the tour will be paid in euros and therefore it is difficult to quote a firm price in sterling at present. The tour has been costed in euros at €350 per person, sharing a double or twin room, with a single supplement of €150. These prices are comparable to previous years and at the current sterling/euro rate would equate to about £320/460 per person (sharing/single).
The prices are based on a group of 20 as a viable minimum and should therefore reduce slightly for a larger group. The price includes 4 nights B&B accommodation, 1 dinner and 2 lunches and all admission fees and tour travel. In addition, you will need to allow for your flights and airport-hotel transfers. (Help with arranging transfers will be available & you should allow a maximum of €20 each way).
Once your booking has been accepted you will be invited to pay a £100 deposit, returnable until February 2018. The final price of the tour will be fixed in February and announced at the AGM (10 February). Firm commitments and payment of the balance will then be required by the end of February.
Because we think that there will be strong support for this Tour we are offering it only to Members and their partners at this stage. If you would like to bring a guest please let us know on the form.
Offers of Participation
BCMH members Paul Beaver and Michael Orr have offered presentations and local experts are also available. If you wish to offer a stand or presentation please complete the appropriate section on the form.
A fuller programme &c will be issued in early December, once the viability of the tour has been established. However, it is important to note that there will be a considerable amount of walking involved (at a fairly gentle pace with plenty of pauses) and steps to climb. If you have any doubts about your fitness, please contact Michael Orr to discuss it.
To notify your interest please reply by 13 November, preferably by email.
