Thursday 18th and Friday 19th June 2020

Deadline 1st April 2020

King’s College London and the University of Oxford invites early career researchers and postgraduates of any discipline to the 2020 History of War Conference, organised by the Sir Michael Howard Centre for the History of War. The conference has a strong record of hosting papers from scholars working in a variety of different fields, including Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, History, Film Studies and English, and this year we seek to continue and expand upon this multidisciplinary legacy. Military historian Sir Michael Howard once wrote, ‘War [is] part of a totality of human experience’, and it is this sentiment that the convening committee are keen for the 2020 conference to embody.

Taking inspiration from Sir Michael’s appeal to understand war as part of a wider totality, the conference aims to explore varying aspects of war. As always, we welcome scholars working on operational or strategic history. However, we are also eager to hear from PGRs and ECRs researching more divergent themes, such as cultural representations of conflict and violence, social histories of those who experienced war, and even,  the impact of war upon particular facets of society, including economics, medicine, pedagogy and/ or literature. We aim to attract scholars who are using different methodologies or those whose research is concerned with different regions or peoples, and very much welcome students from disciplines other than history.

The 2020 History of War conference will be held at King’s College London on 18th and 19th June. The organisers therefore invite researchers to submit proposals on any aspect of war for consideration for the conference. Papers should be no more than 20 minutes in length and abstracts no longer than 300 words. Please also include a short biographical statement (maximum 100 words).

The deadline for abstract submissions, not full papers is 1st April 2020 and all submissions should be emailed to joshua.bilton@kcl.ac.uk

If you have any questions, please get in touch with Joshua Bilton (joshua.bilton@kcl.ac.uk) or Sarah-Louise Miller (sarah-louise.miller@kcl.ac.uk)
