Report as at 17 November 2020
I am pleased to announce that the independent committee for the BCMH’s Student Covid Support Grant has now met. The committee consisted of Prof. Anne Curry, Dr Aimée Fox, and our own Prof Marco Wyss.
In all we had eight applications, of which seven were approved by the committee, and one was invited to resubmit with a more detailed application in a subsequent round (should we run one).
The successful applicants have been notified by email.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Anne, Aimée and Marco not only for taking the time to consider all the applications but also for offering some very helpful advice on how we can improve the rigour of the process and the quality of the applications.

The BCMH is pleased to offer students who are members of the Commission a grant to contribute to the cost of research expenses. This grant is aimed to support students whose studies have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and which has led to the cancellation of research trips.
The BCMH has set aside funding to make up to 10 grants of up £250 per person. The aim is to assist students with their travel and accommodation costs, thereby making trips to archives and other repositories more feasible in these challenging circumstances.
Interested students should submit the attached application form to the Head of the BCMH’s Next-Gen Network, Zack White (z.white@soton.ac.uk), by 17:00 on Sunday 1st November 2020. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by Monday 23rd November 2020.
Applicants are urged to read the terms and conditions on the application form carefully. These include that:
- Applicants must be BCMH members. Applications will be accepted from non-members provided that they apply for BCMH membership separately before the Covid grant closing date of Sunday 1st November.
- Applicants must provide proof of student status
- Successful applicants must be fully paid up members ie to have paid their subscription before submitting a claim.
- All claims will be paid in arrears upon production of a valid receipt.
If you have any questions or questions, please contact Zack White in the first instance.
